toggle navigation about butchery events around the farm farmshop café contact blog welcome to bettys farmshop/butchery/café about us about us welcome to betty’s farm simon, emma, oliver and oscar would like to welcome you to our family run, tenanted farm on the derbyshire/staffordshire border. we have a commercial flock of 24,000 free range laying hens and a small flock of sheep along with some other animals, our shop and butchery. our trademarks are an 11kw wind turbine, which can be seen from the a38 and our 200kw pv system, which help to reduce our impact on the environment. we have a small but perfectly formed team of experts working at betty’s farm. we are also joined on a regular basis by work experience students. our four aims are to: achieve high animal welfare employ locally reduce our impact on the environment to be part of the community history betty’s farm was a greenfield site back in 2009 being used for arable production. it was bought by the john bowler franchise and converted into a free range laying hen unit in 2010 run by emma and simon ruff. emma started selling eggs from a trestle table every saturday and this led to the shop which opened in 2011. the farm shop is named after john bowler’s mother, betty. back in june 2012 we decided to rent the whole farm and since then simon has joined the team permanently to help on farm and to develop the butchery. future we are proud to share our farm with our customers and have extensive plans to develop our farm and shop further in the coming years. butchery our butchery creates a wide selection of bespoke cuts from local farms. our butchery sources meat from not only our own farm but from other local farms who share our philosophy that animals left to range freely in high welfare systems give much tastier, tender meat. we use longhorn cattle that’s been allowed to slowly mature in the lush pastures of north leicestershire. we then dry age the meat here at betty’s for four weeks, to ensure quality and flavour, as standard. that means our burgers are made from the same premium beef as our fillet steak. our chicken and pork comes from packington free range, where robert and alec are as equally passionate about provenance, sustainability and ethical farming as we are. our lamb is all home produced from our flock of ewes, who graze freely in the same pastures as our hens. all our meat is sourced and delivered as “whole” carcass giving us the flexibility to provide you with not only the best cuts but bespoke cuts that are not always available at other butchers. we can also source other products including game depending on season so don’t hesitate to ask in the shop or pre-order from home before you visit. at christmas we stock local turkeys so look out for our turkey and vegetable ordering forms to take the stress out of christmas butchery opening times tuesday to saturday: 9am to 5pm - sunday and bank holidays: 10am to 3pm events what's happening at betty's farm... what's on at betty's..... on the farm, we host a wide variety of events all through the year, from hosting a walking festival to celebrating world egg day, and everything in between! check out "bettys blog" for more details about the events that we have coming up. in addition to the events that we hold for the general public, we can now hold bespoke events that are tailored to suit you. more about the animals: the chickens: we have 24000 laying hens here at bettys who lay us around 22000 eggs a day! our girls live inside the large sheds you can see from the drive with 12000 in each one. we provide the hens with toys inside the sheds as well as them having full access to the fields outside so they have plenty to do as well as laying us their lovely eggs! the sheep: we have a small flock of 20 pure breed jacob ewes as well as a larger flock of 50 texel suffolk crosses. the sheep spend some time here at bettys as well as some time at our sister farm up in buxton. the ewes are bought here for lambing in the spring though so keep your eyes out for lambs in the fields! all our lambs are reared by us, grass finished and are then used to supply our butchery. the small animals: we have a small selection at bettys including rabbits and guinea pigs. all these animals are rescues whose owners could no longer care for them and so we have given them their forever home here. this area also has a pen of chickens to look at and feed including the only cockerel on site! you are welcome to look at these animals (and feed them dandelions which they love!) however we do ask that you do not get them out of the pens as we wouldn't want them lost in the fields! the other animals: along with all the other animals, we also have 2 horses and some goats. these animals love a stroke and will come up to the fence to say hello if you are patient. sign up here to receive the latest betty's farm updates and offers!
